New York Yankees All-Decade Team
December 20th, 2009 | by Craig Williams |Here is The Blue Workhorse’s NYY All-Decade Team.
A few of the selections are no brainers. Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte (left-handed starter) and Mariano Rivera absolutely belong without any sort of clarifications or debates.
This is where this list gets interesting. Blue Workhorse has Bobby Abreu and Johnny Damon in RF and LF, respectively, with Hideki Matsui in the DH spot. I like those selections but you could have some debate considering Gary Sheffield and Jason Giambi at RF and DH. In addition, Robinson Cano was selected as the Yankee 2B of the decade over Alfonso Soriano. Despite some of the good years that Soriano had with us, I am going with Cano 100% of the time because, one, he’s a pimp and, two, because Soriano sucks (another discussion for another day). I’m not a big fan of Mike Mussina making the team as the right-handed starter but we really do not have any better options. Roger Clemens? No, too fickle and too much time in Houston. A.J. Burnett? Probably can’t bump Mussina for just one year of Burnett, even though he played a huge part in No. 27, right? So, Mussina it is.
The first one that I disagree with is Jason Giambi at first. Yes, this debate is similar to a Mussina vs. Burnett debate. However, Teixeira was a driving factor with the glove and the stick on a daily basis. Not only that, but by swooping in and signing him away from the Red Sox at the last hour we really hurt them in the long run for the 2009 season – something that can always put a smile on our faces. The one that I EMPHATICALLY disagree with is Joba Chamberlain as the set-up man on the all-decade team. This is not because he was not effective as a reliever but mostly because I vehemently oppose anything that supports the “Joba as a reliever” camp – at least for now. And to be fair, he did clarify that there is some “confusion” as to what his role is, so its not as if he is lobbying for him to be moved to the ‘pen.
All-in-all, I like this team. Obviously, these All-Decade teams are really just for entertainment and some nostalgia.

Cano is a pimp?…I may be 50 and actually seeing a generation gap here but what the hell are you talking about?

Haha, yea…just a little slang a threw in there. In this sense, I use the term ‘pimp’ to describe Cano because, in addition to being an All-Star caliber player, he has some flare to his game that is fun to watch.

That is hilarious! I had a question about that myself.
